Recal Training

Our mission is to bring the science of better breathing into mountain training—helping athletes train smarter, climb higher, and adventure safer in the mountains.

I’m Anthony Lorubbio.

I’m Anthony Lorubbio — founder, head coach, and resident self-experimenter at Recal Training. I came to the mountains out of curiosity, like a lot of people do. I stayed because they kept teaching me things I didn’t know I needed to learn — especially about breathing.

I hold multiple certifications in breathwork (Oxygen Advantage, Wim Hof Method, Peak Flow) and I’m currently pursuing a master’s in Exercise Physiology with a focus on high-altitude physiology. But the real education happened in my own experiments: taping my mouth shut during my first—and only—marathon, racing up 14ers without acclimatizing, and generally treating myself as a slightly over-eager lab rat. Those tests shaped our beginnings, before I happily handed the “extreme testing” over to athletes who enjoy suffering even more than I do.

Today, we now have tried and true, research-backed breathwork training protocols — ones that have helped hundreds of athletes finish the most challenging ultra marathons and climb the highest mountains in the world.

We built Recal because too many mountain athletes are training everything except the one system they rely on most: their breathing.

Our mission is simple — raise the standard of preparation in the mountain world by giving people the tools, science, and training methods to breathe better, move better, and handle altitude with more confidence and less chaos. Breathwork isn’t a side practice here; it’s the foundation for safer, more enjoyable, more transformative experiences in the mountains.

Cheers to better breathing out there,

“Coach” Anthony

The Recal Approach

We train breathing like you train your legs: with intention, progression, and purpose. Our system is built on three core pillars:

Better Breathing Mechanics

Learn to breathe more optimally: through your nose, slowly/fully, and low into the diaphragm. The goal is oxygen efficiency, nervous system regulation, and movement economy at altitude.

Respiratory Muscle Training

Your diaphragm is THE “breathing” muscle. And your intercostals / abdomen are important for every inhale and exhale. At high altitude, your breathing demands more from them – and they’ll fatigue much faster. We build their strength and endurance so you can prevent them from becoming your limiting factor

High Altitude Adaptation

Using breathwork protocols that simulate low-oxygen / high-CO2 conditions for your body, we kickstart a few key adaptations before you even step on the mountain. Think of it as pre-acclimatization — without the altitude tent.

Who this Is for?

First-time trekkers preparing for Kilimanjaro or Everest Base Camp

Mid or post-career professionals going all-in on their mountain goals

Amateur ultra runners training for high-altitude races

Guides and climbers heading back for another 6,000m+ peak

Whether you live at sea level or sleep in a van above 9,000 feet (like Anthony for the better part of two years....), our program can help you breathe, recover, and perform with more VO₂max and less panic.

Results from the Mountain

Over 200+ mountain athletes have used our breathwork training to:

  • Increase their oxygen saturation by 10% or more at altitude
  • Recover faster between acclimatization hikes
  • Improve quickly when symptoms of altitude sickness appear
  • Hit personal bests in ultra races and mountain summits

These are just some examples of what our athletes have done. Our clients have gone from sea level to the summits of Cotopaxi, Rainier, Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua, and Everest — often without prior high-altitude experience.

"This high-altitude breathwork training was better than any physical training I did to prepare for Everest Base Camp."
— Matt G., from London to Nepal, Oct 2024
"I brought my oxygen saturation back to normal at high camp on Rainier using just my breath."
— Tim F., from Pennsylvania to Rainier, July 2024
"From 2,300m to 6,050m in only four days – without my training with Recal, I wouldn’t have summited Khosar Gang."
— Umer L., Pakistan, August 2024
